Paddle through a 26-kilometre canyon carved over millions of years, past waterfalls, cliffs and hidden beaches you can only reach by river.
Book Your Rafting TripAlbania is one of Europe's last frontiers for wild river rafting. While much of the continent's rivers have been dammed and tamed, Albania's mountain rivers still run free — and three of them stand out for rafting.
Osumi Canyon (Osum River) — The most spectacular rafting trip in Albania. The Osum River has cut a narrow canyon up to 80 metres deep through the mountains near Çorovodë, in the country's south. For roughly 26 kilometres, you float between sheer rock walls, beneath the canyon's many waterfalls, especially powerful in spring — among them the Waterfall of Love and Bigas Waterfall (pinned on Google Maps as "Ujëvara Hasmegaj" — the local name is Bigas) — and pass directly under the Old Italian Bridge partway through the route. See our complete Osumi Canyon guide for everything beyond rafting. Rafting here is only possible from February to mid-June, when snowmelt from the Tomorr mountains feeds the river.
Vjosa River — Europe's last major wild river and now a National Park, the Vjosa offers wide, powerful water and beautiful open valley scenery near Përmet. It's a fantastic river — but it's a different experience: broad and scenic rather than enclosed and dramatic. See our Osumi Canyon vs Vjosa River comparison if you're deciding between the two.
Devoll River — A lesser-known option in southeastern Albania with shorter commercial trips and limited operators.
If you want the single most memorable rafting day in Albania — the one where photos don't do it justice — Osumi Canyon is the trip. The canyon walls close in around you, the light shifts with every bend, and for hours the only way forward is the river itself.
Most rafting trips follow a river through a valley. On the Osumi, you raft inside the earth — between vertical walls that rise up to 80 metres on both sides. There is no road, no trail, no mobile signal down there. The only way to see it is by water.
In spring, dozens of waterfalls cascade off the canyon rim straight into the river. Some you drift past; some you paddle directly under, if you dare.
The rapids are mostly Class II–III — exciting enough to get your heart going, gentle enough for first-timers and families with children. No experience is required. Our guides handle the technical work; you paddle, laugh, and take it all in.
Osumi Canyon sees a fraction of the visitors of comparable canyons in Western Europe. On many trips, your group has the entire canyon to itself.
The canyon sits near Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage city, and local legend holds that the canyon's caves and rock formations carry stories going back centuries — your guide will share a few along the way.
Compared to many European rafting destinations, rafting in Albania offers excellent value for money while delivering a world-class experience.
Beyond rafting itself, the wider canyon area offers rim hiking, swimming in natural pools, cliff jumping, and traditional Albanian food nearby — many guests build a full day or two around a single rafting trip. Our canyon exploring experience combines several of these into one guided itinerary.
Rafting on the Osum River runs from 1 February to 14 June.
Why these dates? The Osumi is a snowmelt river. Through late winter and spring, melting snow from the Tomorr mountain range keeps water levels high enough for rafts to run the full canyon. By mid-June the river drops, and rafting gives way to our summer activities.
Fastest rapids, coldest conditions. Full wetsuits provided. Best for adrenaline seekers.
Strong flows, warmer weather, waterfalls at their most powerful, and the canyon walls turning green. This is peak season — book ahead.
Warm sunshine, ideal for families and relaxed trips.
From 15 June to 30 November, the canyon transforms: we switch to tubing and water activities — floating the calmer summer river on individual tubes, swimming in emerald pools, and jumping from the rocks. Canyon rim hikes run year-round.
Every trip is led by experienced local guides who know the Osumi in all its moods. Rafts, life jackets and helmets are inspected regularly, and trips are adjusted or postponed if water conditions aren't right — safety always comes before schedule.
Suitable for beginners, families, and groups. Minimum age applies — contact us for details for young children.
Our meeting point is in Çorovodë, the small town at the gateway to the canyon.
No car? Ask us about transfer options when booking — we regularly help visitors arrange transport from Berat.

No experience is needed. Your guide steers the raft and gives simple paddle commands. If you can sit in a boat and hold a paddle, you can do this trip.

Yes, in the right conditions. Late spring and early June trips, with gentler water, are ideal for families. Contact us with your children's ages and we'll recommend the best date.
They're different experiences. The Vjosa is a wide, wild river in an open valley; the Osumi is a narrow, deep canyon with waterfalls and sheer walls. For sheer drama and the feeling of entering another world, most guests say the Osumi canyon trip is the highlight of their Albania visit.
